A real life approach to a fantasy world

I am still searching, in real life as well as with my website. Again I have decided to try a different approach. My main focus was on writing and learning about generating income, becoming financially independent was my first priority. This is still the case but now I would like to start writing about other important categories of life as well.

The motivation to do this came from a PC game I am playing. I realized that that game presented so many general aspects of real life and then I thought why not start working to improve those aspects in my real life and use the game as a guideline structure. Follow the same steps as I do in the game.

Most aspects of life that are written down below are all somehow present in the game as well as in every persons real life. However the skills that I describe are personal choices. For example in the game I can train engineering skills. I have no ambition to be an engineer in real life so I choose something else that interests me and fits my qualities. like for example writing or web design. I still think everybody can learn something from my preferred skills as well as from the other categories written below. They can all be improved to let us grow in life.

Skills

Skill 1. trading and selling (retail, own products)

At the moment I promote a lot of products for other people. Later on I hope to start selling my own products.

Skill 2. writing (creating content)

Writing can be a fun, creative and a healing process. Putting your thoughts and ideas on paper can empty your head. I write daily and build up a lot of content which I find really valuable.

Skill 3. First Aid

Learning how to care for someone in an emergency is really important. It is also important to prevent common risks and stay healthy. Learn how to stay healthy and how you can help yourself or others in case of an emergency.

Skill 4. Web design

Designing a website is addictive. It is great to see your site improve every day and there are many fun ways at how you can do that.

Skill 5. Acting

Acting is fun and it gives you the ability to step in to the mind of other people.

Other aspects of life

Exploring

Don’t be afraid for the unknown, be brave and peek around the corner. Explore the planet. There is so much beauty in the world ready to be discovered. Read, travel, talk gain knowledge, meet new people and learn about other cultures and their values.

Physical activity (training)

Stay healthy and exercise regularly. Staying active gives you more energy and makes you happy.

Money

Money is part of the game. You can hate it but you can’t go without it so you can better make the best of it. Don’t fight it, learn to love it. Make it your hobby to collect as much money as you can and solve that money problem once and for all so that you can fully focus on other important aspects of your life. The whole world is a monopoly game and hey you can play a lot of monopoly and become good at it right.

Possessions

During your life you collect possessions. Try to minimize possessions to keep your self mobile and organized. Focus on buying quality items and learn to enjoy them.

Daily tasks

Small daily tasks that you have or want to do to. They could be tasks like cleaning your house but also things like meditating for 15 minutes.

General tasks

Tasks that need to be done, for example doing your taxes, your monthly visit to the barber or buying a new washing machine. Try to reward yourself for finishing a good amount of tasks.

Achievements and goals

Write down your goals and what you want to achieve in life. Today, tomorrow, next month that is up to you. It depends on what kind of deadlines you are comfortable with. Make sure you mix relatively easy goals with extremely difficult ones. Or cut difficult goals in smaller easier steps. The easy goals give you a boost while you work towards your bigger difficult goals. The difficult goals give you a challenge and keep you from becoming bored.

Experience

If you learn skills and do activities you gain experience. The more you know and learn to more experience you get. Keep track of what you learn and keep that gained knowledge up to date.

Mail

It became such an important part of our lives and now it really needs to put a step back. Organize your mail and set fixed times for when you check the mailbox. A seemingly small part of your life but a game changer if you do it correctly.

Reputation

It is all about building up reputation. More reputation means more respect, more work offers, more friends etc.

Social

It is important to socialize. Talk with your friends, family or relatives on a daily basis, visit them or give them a call or an email. Build up and manage your social network and you will gain so much benefits.

Dear reader, I am interested to hear about your preferred skills. Why did you choose them and what benefits did they give you? I am also interested to hear what your experiences are with the other categories. For example: which parts of the world did you explore or what are your most valuable possessions? Leave all your interesting responses in the comment section below.

How to become an expert

Recently I have been reading the 4-hour work week from author Timothy Ferriss. I got inspired from his advice on how to become an expert in a really short time.

Often it is assumed that experts are people who have been working on their skill of expertise for many years. However, a lot of people already consider you an expert if you know more then them about a subject. Even if that more is just a little.

For example creating a WordPress blog. For people that do not know anything about WordPress or web design creating a site could seem like a total out of their league skill. To some people I am already an expert, even though I know I am not.

It does not mean that you have to pretend your something your not. You don’t to have done an expert exam. Isn’t being an expert just a term? Is there really an official required level of skills that you need to have to become one?

Credibility indicators

Like Ferriss I believe that proof of expertise is the number of times you are named in the media, the list of clients that you have or the number of positive testimonials you collected. You can study for a few years and have a Ph.D. in for example marketing. Of course you have gained knowledge over those years but what you really have been studying for is that Ph.D. title. That Ph.D. is making you an expert in peoples eyes. It is what Ferriss terms a credibility indicatort. Building up credibility, knowing more then others and provide them a good and honest service. That will make people respect you and they will recommend your qualities to others. Start collecting those positive recommendations and become an expert.

For more information about this idea of Timothy Ferris I strongly recommend everybody to read his book. His advice about how to become an expert is something that really got me thinking.

Setting Goals

Now it is time to actually start achieving some goals. When I plan I write down my daily goals, weekly goals and monthly goals. I am thinking about making 3 months goal as well but I don’t want to have the goal to far away. I know my fast changing interest in subjects and many things can happen in the mean time. So keep the deadlines short  but don’t make the goals to easy. I set out highly ambitious goals to keep me interested. To easy goals would get me bored an I would probably not achieve them. Set out highly unrealistic goals to have a bigger change of succeeding.

Tell us what you think

Dear readers I would like to know what your goals are and which timeliness you usually set out for them? I am also interested on which subject you guys feel you can be an expert and what do you do to show that.

Doi Inthanon, the first mountain.

My first mountain summit
After a long and tough battle I reached the top of Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand, on 10-07-07 around 16:30 a clock.  Originally it was my goal to go to the mountain to gather some information, scan the environment, climate etc. It took me so long to reach the mountain that I decided to walk to the top at the same day.Visitor center Doi Inthanon

I was dropped of at the visitor center and went inside to ask how much km it was to the top.  It turned out to be 17 km. I thought that was a task I could complete so I bought some more water and started walking.  It was in the middle of the day so the sun was very hot. To hot in my opinion. The extra water I bought became very useful as well as the salted chips and chocolate that kept me going. Still after two hours I was battling not to get a heath stroke. At extreme moments like that you really learn how to be good for yourself. You have to take care of yourself otherwise you won’t make it. You have to eat, you have to drink.  Even if you don’t want to.

The road went on and so did I. Occasionally I got a surprised look from people who where going up or down the mountain. What was that strange farrang doing, walking up the mountain in the heath of the day. There was a guy who approved me when he saw me battling the steep mountain road. He turned out to be Dutch like me and he turned out to become my hero of the day. He asked how I was doing and offered me a ride to the top. I rejected. Sure I would like it but then I would not be satisfied at the end.  He wanted to help me  though and offered to go to the top a little bit later and then wait for me there so that we both could drive back down.  He turned to go visit the waterfall first and I went on with my mission.

Great view
Great view from Doi Inthanon

The battle became  more tough every meter and I needed to res a lot.  Yet I was determined to make it and now I had a deadline. I needed to be on that mountain to at 16:00 a clock to get a nice ride back to town. I still had 9 tough km’s to go. The whole time dangerously dark clouds hang above me and I started to worry as it got later and later. Worst of all I did not have a jacket. I had bought a poncho the day before I went to the mountain but it turned out to be a child size.

Luckely I found a shop along the way and was able to buy a good sized poncho. The lady also gave me the demorilizing news that I still had to climb 5 km’s. I looked at the sky. The wether got worse. It got late and I was about to miss my deadline. I thought about giving up but could not stand that idea because I was so close to my goal.  I decided to push on. The next few km’s there where a lot more moments where I thought of giving up. But I was so close..

At some point Serge, the guy that offered to help me, drove by on his way to the top. I waved but he did not notice me. I  knew now that I had to hurry to the top otherwise I could be stuck on a mountain without the promise of a ride back. I was at my breaking point though. The steep parts where horrible and I had to stop every 50 meter to stop the burning feeling in my legs.  Every time the road got steep there was a warning sign and I strarted to hate it.  Every once in a while a different sighn showed me how much km it was to the top, 5, 4, 3..

The last 2 km's
The last 2 km’s to the top

The view was breathtaking but I could not bring up the power anymore to look or make pictures. I was determined to reach the top thinking of nothing. Just one step after another. Just as I thought the last 2 km whould demolisch my body. Serge came back from the top. He told me I was almost there. Where did those last two km’s go? He offered  me a ride again. I told him I would walk. We went around the corner and there it was the summit.  Yet I was so broken down I did not even had the energy to be uforic.

The highest point in Thailand

We made some photo’s as prove. It was great that Serge could make them. How would I be able to make those pictures on my own. Serge turned out to be even more of a hero by driving me all the way back to the center of Chang Mai. As soon as we reached Chang Mai, the sky bursted open and rain came down on us in buckets. We got soken weth but I could not be more thankfull that those could that where hanging abouve me did not burst open earlyer that day.

It was an exting day and a great adventure. We celebrated with beers that night. Step ! of my goal was accomplished.
